A Bias in Optical Observations of High Redshift Luminous Infrared Galaxies

چکیده

We present evidence for the dramatically different morphology between the rest frame UV and 7μm mid-IR emission of VV114 and Arp 299, two nearby (z∼0) violently interacting infrared luminous galaxies (LIRGs). Nearly all LIRGs are interacting systems and it is currently accepted that they dominate the IR emission at z>1. Luminous IR galaxies located at z=1–2 could easily be detected as unresolved sources in deep optical/near-IR ground based surveys, as well as in upcoming 24μm surveys with the Space Infrared Telescope Facility. We demonstrate that the spatial resolution of these surveys will result in blending of the emission from unresolved interacting components. An increased scatter will thus be introduced in the observed optical to mid-IR colors of these galaxies, leading to a systematic underestimation of their dust content. Subject headings: infrared: galaxies – ultraviolet: galaxies – galaxies: individual (Arp 299, VV 114) galaxies: high-redshift – galaxies: starburst – galaxies: irregular

The Rest-frame Optical Properties of Scuba Galaxies

We present optical and near-infrared photometry for a sample of 96 dusty, far-infrared luminous galaxies. We have precise spectroscopic redshifts for all these galaxies yielding a median redshift of < z>= 2.2. The majority, 78, are submillimeter-detected galaxies lying at z = 0.2–3.6, while the remaining 18 are optically-faint μJy radio galaxies at z = 0.9–3.4 which are proposed to be similarly...

OPTICALLY FAINT COUNTERPARTS TO THE ISO-FIRBACK 170μm POPULATION: THE DISCOVERY OF COLD, LUMINOUS GALAXIES AT HIGH REDSHIFT

We present Keck spectroscopy and UKIRT near-IR imaging observations of two 170μm-selected sources from the ISO-FIRBACK survey which have faint counterparts in the optical, and r − K ∼ 5. Both sources were expected to lie at z > 1 based on their far-infrared, submillimeter and radio fluxes, assuming a similar spectral energy distribution to the local ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) Arp 22...

The luminous host galaxies of high redshift BL Lac objects

We present the first near-infrared K s-band (2.1 µm) imaging study of a sizeable sample of 13 high redshift (0.6 < z < 1.3) BL Lac objects in order to characterize the properties of their host galaxies. We are able to clearly detect the surrounding nebulosity in eight objects, and marginally in three others. In all the well resolved objects, we find that the host galaxy is well represented by a...

Continuum Observations of the High-Redshift Universe at Sub-millimetre Wavelengths

New bolometer arrays operating on the world’s largest submillimetre and millimetre telescopes offer a unique view of the highredshift universe with unprecedented sensitivity. Recent sub-millimetre continuum studies show that the host galaxies of many luminous highredshift active galactic nuclei (radio galaxies and radio-quiet quasars) radiate strongly at rest-frame far-infrared wavelengths and ...

Identification of Luminous Infrared Galaxies

We present preliminary results on 24μm detections of luminous infrared galaxies at z > ∼ 1 with the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS). Observations were performed in the Lockman Hole and the Extended Groth Strip (EGS), and were supplemented by data obtained with the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) between 3 and 9μm. The positional accuracy of ∼ 2 ′′ for most MIPS/IRAC detections prov...
